Ming Yan Tea Co., Wuyishan, Fujian

One of the locally famous single varietal rock teas that still holds true to this day.

Named for the stocky tea trees to which they are picked, it’d be difficult for copy-cat charlatans to pull a fast one due to its iconic stature. Grown from Wuyi’s mineral rich rock (yan) soils, short leg (ai jiao) oolong has the distinctive wet riverstone essence synonymous to the region’s single varietal oolongs. The firing is not heavy-handed as nothing needs to be masked. Instead it leaves you standing under a waterfall with your mouth agape, taking in what nature intended.
